and miles to go before we sleep...

Alright maybe that's an exaggerating a bit.
When we spent the day at Castlewood State Park, and decided to take a hike on one of the trails that was a 1 1/2 mile loop... that was definitely the thought going through my mind.
We kinda took a wrong turn and ended up on the 3+ mile scenic route. Up to the top of the bluff and down, down, down to the river. Really beautiful -- such gorgeous views, trees, a little lizard, wildflowers. It was a little long for Katie's little legs and by the end she was piggy back to the parking lot.
All along the way, Katie was picking up "special" rocks for her rock collection and putting them in a plastic bag to take home. It wasn't too far and the bag was super heavy, so we had to start making her point out what exactly was special about it before it could go into the bag.
Here's one, obviously a way into the hike by the dirty face ---

It was probably my favorite day of our vacation and we've decided it's a must for the fall when the trees change. Next time I won't wear flip flops. Yep, I'm not the spokesmodel for REI.

My Dear Tammy....hiking and flip-flops don't quite go together. But I'm glad the experience was great for you and the family.
I'll have to write that one down for me and my family to do soon.

I love the hiking photos--and Katie and her "special" rocks. Sooo much like her Grandma Virginia, always finding treasures along the way. And Tammy, I thought I had taught you somewhere along the way that flip-flops are not for hiking, and hiking is not a time for fashion. Now I know where Hannah got the idea that flip flops were for playing tennis?? You all are such sweethearts--hope you didn't get too sore feet from the venture. It was worth it cause you got some special pictures. Thanks for taking us along for the journey.
Love, Mom
